Why did I name my business RAWthentic Nutrition?
Let me start by asking you a question. - What words/things come to mind when you read, hear or say the word RAW? - To me, RAW means: unaltered from the natural integrity of whatever it is you're referring to (can describe a person's demeanor as well as the state of foods). No, I do not eat only raw foods (although raw foods are essential to a health-promoting diet). I do, however, intend to be as RAW as I can be in both my personal and professional life (which are entities of each other, as you will learn in my explanation of the "authentic" part to the whole). I have no financial ties or incentives. My goal is to be an "unaltered", "uninhibited", and "uncomplicated" anchor of support, accountability, and education for clients, friends, loved ones, and of course, myself.
Again, allow me to ask you: What comes to mind when you read this word? At the beginning of my Wellness Journey, I always questioned why nourishing one's body was so (perceivably) difficult. Lighting my research "fire" were two consistent questions: How were our ancestors able to live their lives long enough and well enough to pass along their genes without all of our fancy measurements, precise portions, and expensive support services? And, How can I eat in a way that is less complex and more authentic (meaning identifiable and recognizable to the elderly generations - AKA whole foods)? There MUST be a simpler solution!
"Choosing authenticity means: Cultivating the courage to be imperfect, to set boundaries, and to allow ourselves to be vulnerable; exercising the compassion that comes from knowing that we are all made of strength and struggle and connected to each other through a loving and resilient human spirit; nurturing the connection and sense of belonging that can only happen when we let go of what we are supposed to be and embrace who we are."
Dr. Brown's definition of authenticity bridges the gap between my two ideas of what it means to have authenticity and to be authentic. Her words encompass my very reason for fusing the words RAW and Authentic together. In turn, my lifestyle became my practice and my practice became just that - a daily practice (aka a "lifestyle"). The day I named my business RAWthentic Nutrition was the day I pledged to myself and all of the wonderful people I was to have the privilege of supporting, that I would give meaning to the phrase, "Practice what you preach." I became committed to speak only from my experiences and to approach every Program with respect for what Joshua Rosenthal calls, "Bio-Individuality."
I will sum this all up with another quote from Dr. Brown. This time she speaks on Integrity...
“Integrity is choosing courage over comfort; choosing what is right over what is fun, fast, or easy; and choosing to practice our values rather than simply professing them.”
- Brené Brown, "Rising Strong"
RAW + Authentic (with a splash of integrity) =
A client's experience and a Health Coaches life.
